Icelandic for beginners

In general

To be able to study Icelandic in Tungumálaskólinn, the students need a fairly good Internet connection, a dictionary, either a printed one or an on-line dictionary. In addition, there are good translation possibilities on the Internet. They need MSN and Skype-software; both are free and can be downloaded form the Internet.
We emphasize that it is important to weave studies in Icelandic with Icelandic culture and society and to make our courses as informative and interesting as possible. Our aim is to make the students fairly knowledgeable about the Icelandic society when they have taken a course in Tungumálaskólinn. Therefore, the curriculum is integrated with what is happening in the society during the course.
Students can ask questions in English, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Italian.

Distance Learning

It is important that the students start with learning the main items in studying Icelandic on the Internet so that most of the basic teaching can be done in Icelandic. The curriculum has to do with daily life, what it means to move to Iceland and to live there. Among other things the vocabulary used in official information, at work, the home, school etc. It is important to teach the students the vocabulary of every day life and practical information about starting to learn Icelandic, getting to know and live in a new country.

Vocabulary : A great deal of emphasis is placed on building up a vocabulary with pictures and sounds. The exercises are multiple choice forms, filling in blanks and marking the right answers. Furthermore the students train by listening to texts and then choosing the right alternatives, listening and then answering questions.

Speaking: When teaching the students to speak Icelandic, we use WizIq, free for students but recorded so you can listen to your class for one year. The students attend class live on the Internet. To begin with, the student gets a private class to train their pronunciation and then we move on to scheduled lessons on the Internet where several students train together.

Writing: The students learn to write in steps according to a particular scheme where new moments are added as their ability to write in Icelandic grows.

Dictation: The students listen to a text and write once every week.

Correspondence with the teacher: By using MSN, the students communicate with the teacher. Once every week, they get a private lesson with the teacher. We try to find a time that fits the student’s schedule.

Grammar: When teaching declensions by case and conjugation, the teacher will use the vocabulary that is in the learning material that very week. We do our utmost to make varied exercises. Interactive exercises give excellent results and it is our aim to mak e learning Icelandic grammar an enjoyable and interesting experience.

A grammar booklet is made available by Tungumálaskólinn for all our students.

Entertainment: Icelandic crosswords, games where you train vocabulary and other entertainment is available in Tungumálaskólinn. We upload new material every week.
Material for the students to print is made available.
