All studentsthat are not beginners, are asked to fill in a form were they evaluatetheir knowledge in Icelandic and inform us of what they expect from thenext level.

In general

To be able to study Icelandic in Tungumálaskólinn, the students need a fairly good Internet connection, a dictionary, either a printed one or an on-line dictionary. In addition, there are good translation possibilities on the Internet. They need MSN and Skype-software; both are free and can be downloaded form the Internet.
We emphasize that it is important to weave studies in Icelandic with Icelandic culture and society and to make our courses as informative and interesting as possible. Our aim is to make the students fairly knowledgeable about the Icelandic society when they have taken a course in Tungumálaskólinn. Therefore, the curriculum is integrated with what is happening in the society during the course.
Students can ask questions in English, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Italian.

Distance Learning

Level 2 is about the students daily routines; the home, going shopping, the workplace, school and the student’s interests, hobbies and activities in daily life.

Teaching: Regarding vocabulary, progress and demands, we follow the syllabus set up for Icelandic as a Foreign Language

Vocabulary : A great deal of emphasis is placed on building up vocabulary with pictures and sounds. The exercises are multiple choice forms, filling in blanks and marking the right answers.
We use both thematic exercises and smaller ones. The vocabulary is trained by using words from their daily life and the students use this vocabulary independently in an exercise at the end of the course.

Understanding texts. The teacher reads short texts, either from the news, from books or the Internet. After each text there is short interactive exercise.

Training speech: When teaching the students to speak Icelandic, we use Skype. The students attend class live on the Internet and make a schedule for these lessons in cooperation with the students.

Writing: The students learn to write in steps according to a particular scheme where new moments are added as their ability to write in Icelandic grows.

Dictation: The students listen to a text and write once every week.

Correspondence with the teacher: By using MSN, the students communicate with the teacher. Once every week, they get a private lesson with the teacher. We try to find a time that fits the student’s schedule.

Grammar: When teaching declensions by case and conjugation, the teacher will use the vocabulary that is in the learning material that very week. We do our utmost to make varied exercises. Interactive exercises give excellent results and it is our aim to make learning Icelandic grammar an enjoyable and interesting experience.

A grammar booklet is made available by Tungumálaskólinn for all our students.

Entertainment: Icelandic crosswords, games were you train vocabulary and other entertainment is available in Tungumálaskólinn. We upload new material every week.
Material for the students to print is made available.
